News

Michael Dockery

I am writing to inform you of the very sad news that one of our members, Michael Dockery, has passed away.

He has been a member of Davyhulme u3a for many years and led the Natural History, Geography and Psychology Groups.  He also encouraged pickleball, tennis, croquet and ceilidh dancing. Hopefully, I haven’t missed any!

I had met him previously to joining the u3a as he came into the Infant School where I worked to talk to the children about Natural History.  Not only did the children enjoy these visits but the staff did too!  He was well liked and respected by everyone and the phrase “perfect gentleman” keeps coming up by them.

My husband and I, along with another couple, attended quiz nights at his tennis club in Whalley Range and ceilidh dances at Urmston Grammar School to raise money for Urmston Sports Centre.  He played croquet at the sports centre and some of you may know that too, as it was with former u3a members.

Most recently he has been our Programme Secretary, arranging the Speakers that we have at the Forum Meetings, and I think you will agree, did an excellent job!

You will also have seen him taking charge of the microphone and sound at our meetings for which we were always very grateful.

I have been in touch with his nephew, Daniel, who should have been our Speaker for yesterday, but obviously under the circumstances, couldn’t do the talk.  I have conveyed our sincere condolences to him, and he will inform us of the funeral arrangements when they have been made.

I will, of course, pass on the details of the funeral arrangements when I have received them.

Kind regards

Irene Codd

Secretary – Davyhulme u3a

February 2024

We had a very interesting tour of Ordsall Hall and gardens in Salford.

Christmas 2024 Celebrations

We had a great time at Davyhulme Golf club with a wonderful festive meal in December. A chance to get to know new people at this social event.

Davyhulme U3A Committee opportunity:

We are a very friendly and supportive Committee and meet every two months for a short discussion meeting to plan for the future.

You are welcome to come along to our Committee meetings to see what goes on. Do contact any of the Committee members if you wish to do this.

At the present time a few roles are becoming vacant as people move onto pastures new. The current vacancies & their responsibilities are outlined here:-

Programme Secretary

  • The Programme secretary is responsible for setting the dates & booking the speakers for the Monthly Forum.
  • Check the Forum dates, then double check them with the Treasurer, who is responsible for booking the Venue.
  • Contact a variety of speakers from the list provided.
  • Keep a record of the Programme with the speakers’ contact details, fee and equipment.
  • Contact the speakers the week before to confirm their attendance.

The members already in these positions are willing for you to shadow their activities before taking over.

***PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING FOR EACH MEETING***

Hopefully members are keeping up to date with their vaccinations but as Covid is still around we need to be aware of this and, therefore, please do not attend meetings if you are feeling unwell.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION IN THESE MATTERS
